Flash telnet client demo is live: FlashTerm

I’m happy to launch my Flash telnet client, which I’m calling FlashTerm, based off the AS3ANSI library. FlashTerm is only meant to be a UI for AS3ANSI, which handles all the parsing and viewing operations for both ANSI and telnet controls and will remain open source.

The demo is a default installation of Synchronet (fantastic BBS software which is still very actively maintained) that I have running on an crappy old WinXP HP server. The socket security policy server was fairly straightforward to set up. I used a PHP script from Maxim Sprey, but there are numerous server scripts written in different languages all over the web (Adobe posted some in Perl and Python).

Please keep in mind that this is still in early beta, and I’m aware of the numerous bugs that still exist. A few Sysops have agreed to help beta test, and I hope to have a more stable client is the very near future. Thanks to everyone who has provided their feedback and encouragement.

Don’t forget to click on the Flash object to enable keyboard focus! (UI fix for that in the future)

Looks great! I like to see the PHP socket server is being used, I feel it’s the best way to get quick cross-computer communication like chat, multiplayer games, and other raw protocol communication like this going in Flash. Nice blog btw!

Hmm… the socket server seems to be down.

Very cool looking…but it needs some work. Right after connecting, I try to type ‘New’, but when i type ‘N’ it inserts about 20 characters of random garbage (upper ascii characters, random symbols, etc).

Ya, it’s definately in beta. I have a laundry list of things to improve. This is just the beginning. :) Thanks for checking it out!

Hey, that’s a really good idea.

I was just thinking a few seconds ago about creating this for the second extension example of SmartSocket!

  7. I have been wanting this for a LONG LONG time now. Due to not having the money and not knowing flash myself I couldn’t do this. I will be following this closely and hope it gets worked on actively. One thing I would like to see is auto login params for the embed statements. name/md5(password) type of thing. Also, a wildcard type of param that we can set. I modified an old version of gamesrv to load games only without the “login” etc aspect. So, you can have a website handle the user/password and just have the people point and click a icon and it will load the old dos/w32 games for your users to play.

  9. It didn’t let me post the code. Lets see if it will let me post the link.
